Sewer Defined

A channel or conduit that carries wastewater and storm-water runoff from the source to a treatment plant or receiving stream. "Sanitary" sewers carry household, industrial, and commercial waste. "Storm" sewers carry runoff from rain or snow. "Combined" sewers handle both.

Mich. raw sewage releases down 30 percent in 2007

MUSKEGON - The state's municipal sewer systems released 26 billion gallons of raw or partially treated sewage into surface waters during 2007, down 30 percent from the 37 billion gallons released the previous year, according to a report released by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
