Landfills Defined

1. Sanitary landfills are disposal sites for non-hazardous solid wastes spread in layers, compacted to the smallest practical volume, and covered by material applied at the end of each operating day. 2. Secure chemical landfills are disposal sites for hazardous waste, selected and designed to minimize the chance of release of hazardous substances into the environment.

  • SOLID WASTE: In natural systems, there is no such thing as waste. Everything flows in a natural cycle of use and reuse. Living organisms consume materials and eventually return them to the environment, usually in a different form, for reuse. Solid waste (or trash) is a human concept. It refers to a variety of discarded materials, not liquid or gas, that are deemed useless or worthless. However, what is worthless to one person may be of value to someone else, and solid wastes can be considered to be misplaced resources. Learning effective ways to reduce the amount of wastes produced and to recycle valuable resources contained in the wastes is important if humans wish to maintain a livable and sustainable environment.

  • Ash Loading Test Plan: Updated 4/27/2009. The objective of the Ash Loading Test is to evaluate loading, material containment, transportation and unloading methodologies for processed ash at the Kingston Fossil (KIF) Plant in Harriman, TN. The material to be transferred to the selected disposal sites is fly ash from coal used in coal fired boilers dispersed from the closed dredge cell on Dec. 22, 2008. The ash will undergo a processing procedure to ensure its proper moisture content for off-site disposal. Includes information about sampling and analysis, disposal and acceptance criteria, the loading process, railcar loading plan, truck loading plans, and transportation methods.
  • TVA: Kingston Ash Slide - Ash Loading Test: TVA has begun a limited test of the removal of spilled fly ash from the Kingston site by rail. In the test, multiple companies will load, unload, and transport ash by rail to multiple, Class 1, state-regulate d landfills outside the state of Tennessee over the next two weeks. Ash that has been dredged from the Emory River Channel and processed in the temporary storage area will be loaded into railcars using a large backhoe.
  • revised_ash_pr ocessing.pdf: This February 25, 2009 document provides a breif narrative and sketches describing the intended ash dewatering operation and temporary storage area. Document discusses wind dispersal potential and prevention, processing of material, and other topics.
  • Ash Slide at TVA Kingston Fossil Plant Soil Testing - Landfill Sample Locations: Ash samples were collected from landfill locations. This aerial image provides an overlay of landfill sampling locations. Both soil and ash samples are being analyzed for total metals, TCLP metals (which helps to determine how likely metals are to leach from the material), radioactivity and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.
