The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Roche COBAS(R) TaqMan(R) HBV Test, the first assay for quantitating Hepatitis B Virus DNA approved in the U.S. The test uses Roche's real-time PCR technology to quantify the amount of Hepatitis B virus DNA in a patient's blood.

Local economy drowsy in July

The local economy reverted to its lackluster ways in July after a slight uptick in June. The Index of Economic Activity in Tompkins County declined in July to a level of 151.24 from a revised mark of 152.24 in June. This amounts to a loss of 0.66 percent. Compared to July 2007, economic activity was a meager 0.05 percent higher. A hefty decline in employment depressed the entire index.
Wall of worry in U.S. funds

Mutual funds that invest mostly in U.S. stocks climbed a wall of worry last month. Despite sluggish growth in the United States and a slowdown in consumer spending, the Morningstar U.S. equity mutual fund index was among the best performing of all 42 fund indices last month.
